In today's hyper-connected world, reliable internet access while traveling is a necessity. Imagine effortlessly switching between mobile networks across over 200 countries without the hassle of physical SIM cards. The Airalo app makes this a reality with its innovative eSIM technology, revolutionizing how we stay connected on the go.

Challenge

This project focuses on redesigning the Airalo app to enhance usability and modernize its user interface. As part of my first case study, key improvements include streamlining the onboarding process, improving navigation, and updating the visual design. This case study documents the redesign stages, highlighting issues, solutions, methods, and results, providing detailed insight into the design process and improvements made.

Personas

To ensure the redesign of the Airalo app effectively meets user needs,
I created two detailed personas:
Anna, the Frequent Traveler, and Max, the Business Traveler.
These personas helped in understanding the different user types and their specific requirements.
By focusing on these personas, I was able to tailor the app's redesign to address their specific pain points and enhance their overall user experience.

User journey map

The user journey map was created to outline the key steps and interactions Anna and Max experience while using the Airalo app.
It includes actions like opening the app, onboarding, selecting an eSIM, making a purchase, and using the eSIM.
By mapping out their journeys, I identified pain points and
opportunities for improvement, ensuring a smoother and more intuitive user experience.

Wireframes

To visualize the redesign concepts, I created detailed wireframes for the Airalo app. These wireframes focused on key screens, including the onboarding process, eSIM selection, and purchase flow. By sketching out the basic layouts and structures, I was able to plan the user interface and ensure a logical and user-friendly design before moving on to high-fidelity mockups. Additionally, I prioritized accessibility by using simple language, a clean design, and minimizing the use of icons to make the app more senior-friendly. The wireframes are highly refined, ensuring that all users, regardless of ability, can navigate and utilize the app effectively.

Design system

A comprehensive design system was created for the Airalo app
to ensure consistency
and modern aesthetics. This system defines key elements such as typography, iconography, colors, and shadows, providing a unified and cohesive user experience throughout the app.

High-Fidelity Mockups

The high-fidelity mockups breathe life into the redesigned Airalo app, featuring detailed and polished versions of key screens. These mockups showcase the finalized layout, visual style, and interactive elements, providing a clear and engaging preview of the user experience. They are essential for thorough review and refinement before final implementation.

Next steps

As we move forward, it's crucial to maintain a user-centric approach and ensure that the improvements made are continuously refined and expanded. By leveraging ongoing feedback, expanding our design capabilities, and staying responsive to market trends, we can keep enhancing the user experience and drive the app's success.

Further usability tests

Conduct further tests to continuously gather feedback and make improvements.

Expansion of the design system

Adding more components and patterns to cover future design requirements.

Regular updates

Implementing new features and customizations based on user feedback
and market trends.

Marketing and promotion

Developing a marketing strategy to promote the new version of the app
and attract new users.
